In a state with more than 2,000 elementary and middle schools serving students of all backgrounds, it seems nearly impossible to determine which ones are doing best. But that hasn't stopped New Jersey from trying. The state for the first time this year rated its public schools on a scale of 0-100 and published the results in its annual school report cards, relying primarily on standardized test results to grade schools. So, what really sets schools apart? The ratings consider students' year-to-year improvement on annual PARCC tests with a heavy focus on key groups, such as English-language learners and economically disadvantaged students. That made the ratings a mixed bag with affluent suburban schools, urban schools and charter schools all cracking the list of 50 highest-rated elementary and middle schools. Check out the list below, but remember that with any ranking there's also controversy.Superintendents have already dismissed the ratings as oversimplified and misleading, and the state said the ratings don't capture the full picture of what happens inside a school.
